Als je de media moet geloven, beleefde Australië deze week de heetste dag ooit. Als je de geschiedenis negeert wel ja, schrijft de Australische blogger en spreker Joanne Nova op haar website.

Ze is in de archieven gaan spitten en stuitte op interessante krantenknipsels uit januari 1896, toen mensen dood neervielen en vogels uit de bomen vielen.

Australiërs werden indertijd vanwege de extreme hitte van het platteland per trein naar de bergen vervoerd.

Stukken koeler

Vijftig jaar na dato schreven wetenschappers papers waarin ze opmerkten hoe Australische zomers sindsdien stukken koeler waren geworden.

Hoe weet de Australische meteorologische dienst BOM zo zeker dat het in 1896 niet heter was? Dat weet zij waarschijnlijk niet, aldus Nova.

Uit krantenberichten die de schrijfster heeft gevonden in de Nationale bibliotheek van Australië blijkt dat 23 of 24 januari 1896 de heetste dag was.

Toen was het in bijvoorbeeld Geraldton 51,7 graden Celsius. In New Angeldool steeg het kwik tot 51,1 graden en in Camden werd het 50,5 graden.

Op sommige plekken werden tot wel drie weken lang extreem hoge temperaturen gemeten, tot meer dan 43,3 graden, stelt Nova.

In Nannine en Cunnamulla werden pieken van 48,8 graden gemeten en in Bourke was het 24 dagen op rij warmer dan 38,9 graden.

Bourke N.S.W. 6 Jan – ”The fact is that out of 93 weather telegrams sent in, 64 gave temperatures ranging from 100° at Cooma, Tabulam, Tenterfield, and a few other places, up to 118° in the shade recorded at Brewarrina and at Bourke. There were 22 stations which reported temperatures ranging from 110° to 118° inclusive.
